This course introduces mechanisms, tricks and guidelines for measuring the performance of Medium Access Control algorithms in wireless networks. Students will learn how to modify MAC algorithms using the opensource firmware OpenFWWF that allows a deep customisation of the behaviour of specific 802.11 consumer devices. At the end of the course, students will learn how to run complex experiments involving several nodes managed in an automated fashion: to this end, after several weeks of training on specific assignments followed by the lab facilitator, they will be assigned a project that will be evaluated during the final examination.
